    Services for students who learned English as a second language

    John Jay College has a wide range of services for students who learned English as a second language. We also have resources to help faculty and tutors work effectively with students whose native language is not English.

    • Tutoring with ESL specialists at the Writing Center
      ESL specialists at the Writing Center have Master’s degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language. They can help you with academic writing, academic reading, and class presentations. You can request an “ESL specialist” when you visit the Writing Center (1.68 New Building).
    • Sections of ENG 101, ENG 201, and First Year Seminars for students who learned English as a second language
      These sections are taught by professors with experience and expertise in working with students who learned English as a second language.
    • E-Resource Center (online tutorials)
      The E-Resource Center has interactive tutorials for writing, grammar, and preparing for the CUNY Assessment Tests in Reading and Writing.
    • CUNY International Student Guide
      CUNY International Student Guide provides valuable information about visas, employment, living in New York, along with profiles of international students studying at CUNY.

    Services for Faculty and Tutors

    • E-Resource Center (online advice and worksheets) 
      The faculty section of the E-Resource Center provides tools and resources for working with non-native speakers.The tutor section provides a guidebook for working with non-native speakers, as well as practical worksheets on grammar and academic vocabulary that can be used in tutoring sessions.
