    Writing and Rhetoric Help

    CUNY WriteSite

About: The WriteSite is an Online Writing Lab, or OWL—a collection of writing resources and a way of interacting with other CUNY writers through the Internet. It complements face-to-face resources, like your campus Writing Center, and it’s always open. You could call it a “night OWL,” or a “weekend OWL,” because it’s always here, ready to help you.

We offer online instructional support in grammar and style, help with each stage of the writing process, and hints for how to handle various kinds of writing, throughout the disciplines. We provide interactive practice exercises and discussion of issues connected with writing. We also have links to your campus writing resources and resources on the World Wide Web to help you develop assignments and work on your writing.

    Excelsior Online Writing Lab

About: The Excelsior OWL is designed to provide support for writers as they begin the process of writing for college and as they transition to writing outside of their introductory writing classes or programs.

The Excelsior OWL is available 24/7 and can be used as either a supplement to or a replacement for traditional textbooks in the field. The Excelsior OWL supports students in online or traditional classrooms and can be useful in “flipping” a curriculum. The content of the Excelsior OWL focuses on best practices in the field of writing instruction and provides support for students during the writing process and in a variety of rhetorical situations. The Excelsior OWL emphasizes that there is no one “right” way to write and teaches students to use basic rhetorical concepts to evaluate a situation and respond well. The Excelsior OWL also focuses on helping students make connections from their writing courses to writing across the disciplines and beyond.

    BYU Rhetoric Forrest

About: This online rhetoric guide, provided by Dr. Gideon Burton of Brigham Young University, is an introduction to the terms of classical and renaissance rhetoric. Sometimes it is difficult to see the forest (the big picture) of rhetoric because of the trees (the hundreds of Greek and Latin terms naming figures of speech, etc.) within rhetoric.

This site is intended to help beginners, as well as experts, make sense of rhetoric, both on the small scale (definitions and examples of specific terms) and on the large scale (the purposes of rhetoric, the patterns into which it has fallen historically as it has been taught and practiced for 2000+ years).
